When working with my yoga therapy clients, jaw pain and stiffness are incredibly common. These issues, often stemming from temporomandibular joint disorders, can be quite troublesome. Yet, clients typically bring them up only after discussing their back, shoulder, and hip problems, as they often don't realize yoga therapeutics can help their jaws. They're consistently surprised by how much yoga offers for relieving jaw tension.
A major contributor to jaw issues is the habitual misalignment of the head. Our modern lives, filled with driving, phone use, and computer work, often lead us to habitually jut our heads forward. Even professions like photography or teaching young children can involve this forward head posture. When your head pushes forward, your jaw has to adjust, often changing how your teeth align. This can result in jaw misalignment, contributing to pain or stiffness.
The yoga poses and suggestions we'll explore are not only deeply relaxing but also teach you techniques for bringing your head into optimal alignment, helping to prevent jaw tension.
Daily Solutions for Jaw Tension
Before diving into yoga poses, let's look at some practical daily habits that can provide immediate relief:
Mindful Posture: Throughout your day, consciously draw your skull up and back and sit up straight. This sounds simple, but it's a matter of remembering to do it. For instance, try getting your computer off your lap or leading with your chest instead of your nose when walking. These small shifts prevent your head from jutting forward.
Take Jaw Breaks: To release tension in your jaw, gently circle your jaw a few times using your hand, rather than your jaw muscles. This helps release the mandibular tension.
Tongue Rolls: With your head in an up-and-back position, roll your tongue around the front of your teeth ten times in each direction.
You'll likely notice the pleasant, calming effect these practices can have on your entire nervous system.
Evening Relaxation for Your Jaw
Beyond daily tips and regular yoga exercises, here's one more powerful technique for jaw tension: as you prepare for bed, actively encourage ease and relaxation in your jaw. One effective way to promote this is to count out long, deep breaths (four counts or more on both your inhalation and exhalation) until you drift off to sleep.
Relieving tension throughout your posture can significantly improve your sleep and reduce your overall stress. In fact, you may discover that the combination of relaxation and maintaining an upright spine through yoga creates a wonderful domino effect of relaxation throughout your entire body!
